Hendrick's is a "super-premium" gin produced by William Grant & Sons in Scotland, and was launched in 1999. The recipe was developed by Master Distiller Lesley Gracie a native of Yorkshire in England.
As well as the ubiquitous juniper, Hendrick's is well known for its Bulgarian rose and cucumber flavourings, and the apothecary style dark brown bottle it is sold in.
Hendrick's utilises two seperate distillation methods. One is the pot still where the neutral spirit, botanicals and a small amount of water are added. This is small and enables most of the botanical flavours to pass into the spirit. It is allowed to steep for 24 hours before distillation occurs, enabling a strong flavour to be extracted during distillation. The second still has a "botanical basket" which allows the extraction of lighter, sweeter more floral flavours during distillation when the alcohol spirit evaporates through the copper basket.
The final Hendrick's gin, is a distinctive blend of these two distillates. The cucumber and rose petal essences are added at the end to ensure these flavours shine through.
This rather different distillation method ensured that Hendrick's was awarded with the "Best Gin in the World" award in 2003 by the Wall Street Journal. It has continued to win numerous awards since this time as well. They have a unique, distinctively creative method of marketing too - which ensures this is a well know, and well loved gin!
Hendrick's at Gin Fling
Here at Gin Fling we stock the original Hendrick's Gin, as well as two variants for you to buy and enjoy at a very favourable price:
Hendrick's Gin available in a Mini (5cl) and 70cl with an abv of 41.4%, and with a 44% in 1L. This is the classic recipe described above. Hendricks suggest the perfect serve with tonic water over ice, garnished with cucumber as opposed to the classic citrus. An alternative serving as described by their Master Distiller Lesley Gracie is with soda water and elderflower cordial.
Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice Gin, with a 43.4% abv in a 70cl bottle. This is a limited release / edition which Hendrick's describe as "a light and crisp libation". Its is more floral, and works great as a treat for a weekend brunch, or great on a summer evening (or remembering them!). It works great as a g&t, or for something different as a spritz, with white wine, tonic, and ribbons of cucumber and orange.
Hendrick's Orbium Gin also with an abv of 43.4% and 70cl. This is a distinctly different gin in that it combines the classic Hendrick's flavours with quinine (usually found in tonic) with wormwood and lotus blossom. This gives an "oddly exquisite gin that sits roundly on the palate".
